Who We Are?

Our Approaches

what we do

We facilitate community mobilisation on the theme of health and nutrition along with integration of communities into health-planning to make it more equitable and effective.

strengthen

the public health systems

  • We seek to enable public health practitioners with core knowledge and competencies.

  • Our work on Health Policy and Systems Research promotes evidence-informed policy making.

  • We build capacities of various stakeholders to facilitate setting and strengthening of village committees.

  • We also support in establishing community monitoring processes.

enable nutrition
action

We work with women’s self-help groups, communities and local institutions to promote the concept of good nutrition – consuming foods from different foodgroups such as grains, legumes, animalbased foods and vegetables.

facilitate
establishment of

community-run créches

THE AAM INITIATIVE

Our crèche initiative, covering children under three years, was first launched as part of Action Against Malnutrition (AAM) in Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Odisha through a consortium consisting of PHRS, Ekjut, CINI, Chaupal and IDEA. The programme was supported by Tata Trusts.

The AAM initiative achieved continuity of care between the community, the service providers and Nutrition Rehabilitation Centres.

facilitate establishment of Currently PHRS is implementing “Mainstreaming Creches to Reduce Malnutrition in Odisha” project supported by The Philanthropy and GoO, through establishing 150 crèches in five southern districts of the state.

participatory

learning and action

We use Participatory Learning and Action (PLA) as a tool to mobilize communities such as self help groups, frontline workers, village health, sanitation, and nutrition committee members etc. Such community mobilisation processes act as a long-term capacitybuilding tool and also lead to better maternal and child
health outcomes.

operational research for

public health and nutrition

PHRS conducts action research, some of which include livelihood and dietary diversity studies among Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs). Such studies are expected to improve the nutritional outcomes for women and children under three through better food diversity. Such studies also enhance women’s empowerment.

advocacy and action
to improve

health access among PVTGs

We have also been drawing attention to the need to improve reproductive health services for the community, especially for women, using the frameworks of equity, access, determinants of indigenous health, cultural safety and health rights.

Women and children of PVTGs suffer from extremely high levels of undernutrition, far higher than national and state averages. We conduct regular research on the health services accessed by them. We have consistently been advocating for close-to-community provisioning of health services.

We recently documented the narratives of the Baiga and Sabar communities in Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand regarding their access to health and nutrition services. The research findings were shared with the government.
